In the 2002 World Cup, Turkey and South Korea shocked the world by advancing to the semifinals. But the upstarts didn't get any further, rightfully thwarted by traditional powers Germany and Brazil.
The World Cup analogy is fitting for the 2010 NOTY Tournament, but with a twist. A couple of onomastic minnows -- both play football, though different brands -- have powered through the field and into the big game. For the right to be called the People's NOTY, it's Cameroonian soccerer Banana Yaya taking on Australian rules footballer Steele Sidebottom.
Sidebottom, the Dragonwagon Regional No. 4 seed, rode a wave of nationalistic fervor to pound Chrotchtangle No. 16 Charity Beaver in the Final Four with 82 percent of the vote.
Yaya, the No. 11 seed in the Sithole, shocked Bulltron No. 1 seed Nohjay Nimpson, capturing 57 percent of the vote. We're not sure how he did it; we didn't see any newspaper stories about the tournament coming out of Cameroon.
So who's Your 2010 Name of the Year? Vote below.

Sidebottom "pounds" Beaver. heh.
Keep up the excellent writing.
Ugh. I can't vote for anyone not named X'Zavier Bloodsaw. Gonna have to sit this one out.
Have you looked at the map of Nohjay vs Banana voting? Judging by the votes on the site, Nohjay won by a clear margin. What's the story??
Am sad to see these two names in the winner's circle...
I can't in good conscience vote in this final, all the talent has been eliminated. I think you should have a "losers bracket" just so we can see who would win in a matchup between Nohjay Nimpson vs. X'Zavier Bloodsaw.
Australians ruin everything.
Steele the one.
Worst final ever.
Sooky sooky la las you yanks, get over it.
@Jon Beckham
We're just paying you back for completely destroying out culture.
The only good thing Australia ever did was make fun of New Zealand. And produce Elle MacPherson.

Have to love Americans. Whilst they are pumping millions of litres of oil into the ocean polluting thier own coastline and the world they still point the finger at everyone else.
It's not always about you guys Jon. :)
haha gotta love how us aussies stick together, you all should've realised at the start that steele was gonna win.
Worst NOTY ever, this has become just a popularity contest. Famous people (for example sports players who are not from tiny schools or are in professional leagues) should not be put in the bracket.

I agree, Michael Hunt is the best name ever.
Seriously, go with an athlete bracket and an "everyone else" bracket. This is about names, not about size of the fan club.
Interesting comments about a popularity contest and brackets for athletes when the only reason Nohjay Nimpson is at all amusing or noteworthy is because of O.J. Simpson. Someone no-one outside the US cares about and the name has nothing else going for it.
Unless I've completely missed something.
Weak pick.
there's a hole big world out there ,yanks!!!!!!

Completely agree. Sure Sidebottom is getting some traction because of his Australian support but there are nearly twice as many Californians as Australians. Obviously their networks or the competition isn't striking at the hearts of grass roots campaigns.
I disagree about Nohjay on the OJ reasoning but believe other names were really strong before voted out in the early rounds.
These names could have garnered the Australian vote.
Just remember though there are a lot of Collingwood Football Club supporters (about 15% of AFL fans), they are the most hated team as well, meaning a good opponent, and Steele would be history.
Nohjay...nope.
GO Steele, Go Australia!!
Sidebottom was all over the Beaver in the last round and the SideBOTTOM will hide the banana in the final while he makes Australians proud.
@Igarth, we have 57,084 members.seems the most loved AFL team to boot
GO STEELE, we have your back!!
Seriously, I can assure you we aren't voting for him coz he plays football. Collingwood, peoples! It's all NAME!
America is a peaceful nice counry LOL jk they start wars for a living
Americans you should have got more people to vote for your beloved people, us aussies love all aussies. GO STEELE.
Early candidate for 2011: Ulysses Loving. He's an offensive lineman at Elgin HS (TX).
And if you think some of these comments are funny, you should go sit behind the goals with the Collingwood supporters when they're playing a game! I reckon the old politician from Australia, Richard Face is my all time favourite name. How do you nominate someone for 2011?
Banana, Banana, bo-banana
Banana-fana fo-fanana
Mee-mi-mo-manana
Banana!
Without a doubt, the greatest name of all time is Staff Sgt. Max Fightmaster.
K. Hunt. Karmichael Hunt.
I only came here because I'm a Collingwood member and this page was posted on their official website. Go, Steele!
No issue with the Aussie's in particular, I just don't agree with the results this year. Nor last year, for that matter, which was driven largely by support from the Mingo's University supporters.
What became apparent to me as I thought about this more is how brilliantly the Aussie's played the semi-final round. They clearly were behind the advancement of Banana Yaya over Nojay. The map of votes for that match up overwhelmingly supported Nojay, so all of the Banana votes must have come from outside the US. My guess is that the Aussie's swept Banana into the finals to ensure a weaker opponent. If Nojay had made it to the finals, the US vote likely would have been more unified and put up a decent contest for Steele.
On an unrelated note. Leave the politics and country bashing for other boards, please. I haven't agreed with the NOTY results, but the popularity sway issue remains whether it's a region within the US or international. This board is a fun diversion... It's not life or death, and I certainly don't want to waddle through the "your country sucks" postings.
Relax. Take a breath. And, see ya next year.
To bolster the point about international support for Banana in the last round, tallying results from the Micropoll site state by state, the US vote in the last round was 2:1 in favor of Nojay (641-314). Whereas the non-US vote went 2:1 in favor of Banana (1699-875). There were more non-US votes for Nojay than I had expected, but still significantly more non-US votes for Banana.
Who knows, maybe I shouldn't be giving the Aussies so much credit, maybe the Camaroonians made a strong showing in the last round, but are forgetting to vote in the finals.
Weak.
I think the NOTY comittee should take away voting privilege from the public and go back to a committee only NOTY. It's obvious the general public is not ready for that kind of responsibility.
Also... damn, the Aussies sure are a touchy bunch. Just because Steele Sidebottom is a mid-teens quality name in this year's tournament doesn't mean you have to get all shitty when we call this final for what it is - lame and skewed by vote pumping from a specific country/fanbase.
So, let's see if I got this straight. Lolita Respectnothing and Napoleon Einstein are out in the first round, and Steele Sidebottom is in the final? Nice job breaking it, Australia. I hope you're all happy.
Anonymous said... Have to love Americans. Whilst they are pumping millions of litres of oil into the ocean polluting thier own coastline and the world they still point the finger at everyone else.
Pretty sure it was a British Petroleum muck-up. Nice try, though. Ireland still supports Beaver, for what it's worth.
First it was Spaceman Africa fans who killed 2008, then Barkevious Mingo fans that killed 2009. This year proves to be no different. Steele Sidebottom and his fans suck. Also, go Crows.
Most aussies didn't even know about this until the quarter finals so you can blame yourselves for getting steele that far.
Also I voted for banana because nohjay was a lame name, no conspiracy about getting steele a "weaker" opponent.
Come off it people Steele is a great name. It is funny. Sure I am an Aussie and only found out about this site because of him, but from the moment I first heard his name, I loved it. It is unique and fun. Honestly people probably didn't vote for Nohjay becase she reminds people of something they dislike. And Banana is a great name. I only voted for Steele though and did not participate in the other voting. The whole thing is supposed to be just a bit of fun.
Go Steele!
Charity Beaver should have won.
Go Dees!
I voted for steele because of why he was given the name
steele and not because im australian or a collingwood supporter. For those of you interested he was given the name because his mum wanted a name that would harden him up.
Got to admit its kinda funny.
Im sure my one vote womt make a difference
You do realise "Steele Sidebottom" is his actual name? Us "Aussies" don't do this deed poll shit for made up bullshit pretend names. Nor do we try to name our kids outlandishly (though I'd like some of what Mr. Beaver was smoking).
So stop the bitterness. That a country of 20 million beats a country of 200 million? Maybe you should think about that before you condemn us.
Until then Steele's gonna screw as much Charity Beaver as he can. He deserves it. Name of the Year? You better believe it.
Yeccchhh
Ferschlugginer Aussies..
Hell you Americans have more people in one city than we do in our entire country. Don't give us shit about vote skewing. I've only voted in the semi and the final, along with a lot of other I'd expect.
Hi all, lots of interesting and emotional posts. some salient points though:
most Aussies didn't know the competition existed until Steele made the semi's,
it is a bit Machiavellian to suggest that a mass plunge on a weaker opponent was made to secure his advancement
Steele may play Australian Rules football for Collingwood, and they are the most hated team in the league but they are a passionate bunch
Steele is a ripper bloke, and
Australia may be as large in land mass as the US but we have the population of LA, if we have been able to influence the vote to such an extent it is more of an indictment on the competition than on those that choose to vote in it
GO STEELE...GO PIES...GO AUSTRALIA!!!
How can anybody not like the name Steele Sidebottom? He deserved to get this far.
Banana Yaya is the worst name of all, not even in Steele's league at all.
For the ignorant Americans, Steele Sidebottom is playing his first year this year. He's not famous, and not many Australians even know about this competition.
i voted for steele because its an unusual name for an aussie, unlike americans (& no offence) we dont tend to name out children odd names, Steele Sidebottom is a cool name, GO HARD ASS.
I'm not American nore Australian (British actually) but if these responses have proven one thing it's what the enire world already knew, that the Yanks really are as dumb as dog crap. They're whining that big bad Australia with a population of a paltry 20 odd million has made this a popularity contest when they're up against a potential 300+ million that is the United States! Can they not see how ridiculously absurd that is? Haha
I usually have a very hard time supporting the Aussies in anything given they beat us in just about everything but i'm 100% behind them this time. The responses here have just once again shown how self centered, self important, self absorbed and egotistical Ameriacan's and why the rest of the world thinks they're arrogant jerks.
For the ignorant Americans, Steele Sidebottom is playing his first year this year. He's not famous, and not many Australians even know about this competition
Anonymous,
Steele's in his second year. Though that's probably even further reflects your point I guess. :)
And on a further unrelated note, you might get a kick out of a potential Pies forward line seeing as how much you seem to love us at the moment...

Wow... a lot of silly comments on this board! To clarify a few things to the complainers:
1. Nohjay wouldn't have gotten votes outside the US because, outside of the US, the name just isn't funny.
2. Steele Sidebottom is likely to get more international votes because his name translates into 'hard arse'. That is funny.
3. The Steele Sidebottom "vote rigging" controversy is a bit silly, because the competition hasn't really been known in Australia until the last few days, and further, it's still not that widely known.
4. If you do accept the 'vote-rigging' argument (and I don't), Americans accusing Australians of vote-rigging is a bit like the pot calling the kettle black. For those that voted for someone based on their nationality - and I think just as many Americans have done this as Australians - it is hypocritical to accuse Australians just because the American campaign wasn't as successful.
5. Honestly, GET OVER IT. It is an internet voting campaign. It is a popularity contest. If you cannot muster enough support for your candidate to win, suck it up and move on.
Typical Americans, "do as I say not as I do". Thank goodness we don't listen and can think for ourselves. Something Americans can't do.
Yaya brother is called Banana Banana!
